AUSTIN, Texas, January 16, 2020 — The Secret Life of Mold, a monthly podcast released by Mold Inspection Sciences Texas, recently sat down with Robby Jackson, general manager of Blackmon Mooring & BMS CAT Austin, to discuss the solution for a faster, more efficient response to mold.

“Mold remediation is the process of treating mold-contaminated matter or areas, effectively stopping, reducing, and repairing the growth of mold,” said Jackson. “Mold needs warmth, moisture, and food. A lot of that can be taken care of if you do the correct water mitigation up front. Anytime there is a water loss, it needs to be dealt with immediately. It only takes 48 to 72 hours for mold to become present.”

You don’t even need a flood or broken pipe to have mold. If the humidity is too high or the air quality in a building is off, you can open yourself up to mold growth in air ducts or areas that aren’t receiving the conditioned air quality needed, Jackson said.

“It’s all about the humidity inside vs. outside,” he explained. “Moisture is always going to seek dry. For example, if you put a dry towel in a tub and hang it over the edge, that moisture is going to crawl up that towel and down the other side. Moisture is instinctive that it wants to go to a dry space.”

Mold is a traumatic experience for many consumers, and they don’t understand the risk of not having it professionally handled, Jackson reports.

“Not enough people know that mold assessments and remediation are two different processes that should be kept separate,” he said. “However, when used in a collaborative effort, they can help solve a mold issue much more comprehensively.”

So what makes this relationship so much more efficient? According to Jackson, it’s the checks and balances, the open lines of communication, and having that unique detection expertise available while the restoration is in process.

“Not all mold problems are the same,” says guest co-host and Mold Inspection Sciences Texas Chief Operating Officer Mike Marshall. “Valuable data is collected, so assessment and remediation can successfully work together. Investigating, collecting samples, and laboratory testing is the only way to know for sure what type of mold is present, how much mold is present, and how it may be impacting the indoor environment.”

“That is how we know for sure that we are properly containing, cleaning, and restoring impacted areas,” Jackson adds. “Without a scope of work, we are left to assumptions. It may even be that we need to expand the scope of work once we start working, and we find that there is more damage than initially suspected.
